Limb Reconstruction and Deformity Correction Surgeries
Limb Deformity Correction
WHAT IS LIMB DEFORMITY CORRECTION?
The skeletal system is naturally aligned in both the upper and lower limbs to optimize balanced movement and weight distribution. A deformity is a deviation from the normal alignment of the skeletal system. Deformity correction aims to correct a limb deformity and restore alignment using various surgical techniques, depending on the type and site of the deformity.
TYPES OF DEFORMITIES
- Congenital Deformities
- Tibia Torsion (In-toeing)
- Blount’s disease or Genu Varum (Bow legs)
- Genu Valgum (Knock Knees)
- Post-traumatic deformities (Malunion)
- Joint Contractures
HOW DO YOU TREAT DEFORMITIES?
The majority of bony deformity cases are treated surgically with careful and precise surgical planning. Surgical intervention often involves an osteotomy or breaking of the bone, followed by realignment and skeletal stabilization or fixation with the use of implants. In some cases, non-surgical measures can be attempted using bracing or observation.
Dr Epstein and Prof. Ferreira will tailor their surgical approach based on the type of deformity, the location of the deformity and the severity, always keeping in mind the unique condition of each patient.
