Prof Nando Ferreira is an associate professor and head of the Tumour, Sepsis and Reconstruction unit at
the Division of Orthopaedic Surgery at Stellenbosch University since 2016.
He was born and bred in KwaZulu-Natal and completed his schooling in Durban. After matric he obtained a
BSc degree at Stellenbosch University, majoring in human physiology and genetics,
and then studied medicine, also at Stellenbosch University before returning to Kwa-Zulu Natal to
complete his internship and community service. He commenced his formal orthopaedic training
in Pietermaritzburg in 2006, at the University of Kwa-Zulu Natal (UKZN).
After attending limb reconstruction courses in South Africa, he went to Russia in 2011 for further
training in Ilizarov circular external fixator techniques. In 2015 he was awarded his
doctorate with a dissertation titled ‘The outcome of tibial non-union treatment using a revised
definition, classification system and management strategy’. In March the following year he
left Grey's Hospital, where he worked as a medical specialist, and joined Stellenbosch
University.
Professor Ferreira’s interests include musculoskeletal infections and post-traumatic limb reconstruction
in which he completed both masters and doctoral theses. He has published over
50 peer reviewed articles, 13 conference proceedings and five technical reports. Professor Ferreira
teaches widely on limb reconstruction principles and is the director of the Limb
Lengthening and Reconstruction fellowship at Tygerberg Hospital and Stellenbosch University.
Over the past eight years he has been approached to present more than 40 keynote

Through the University of Stellenbosch and the Division of Orthopaedics, I offer a one year
fellowship in limb lengthening and reconstruction. The objective of this fellowship is to
train fellows with subspecialty-level knowledge and skills in the diagnosis and management of
musculoskeletal infections and limb reconstruction in order to functional independently
as an orthopaedic reconstruction specialist.
This will be achieved through exposure to all aspects of limb salvage and reconstruction and
encompass the management of congenital and developmental deformities, musculoskeletal
infections and post-traumatic reconstruction including malunions, non-unions and bone defects.
Participants will gain experience in various surgical techniques including acute and
gradual deformity correction, bone transport, osteomyelitis debridement and dead space management.
Participants will be exposed to the use of multiple surgical devices and implants
including conventional plates and nails, locking plates, monolateral and fine wire circular external
fixators, hexapod external fixators, intramedullary lengthening devices and
mega-endoprostheses.
The fellowship is hosted in conjunction with the Tygerberg orthopaedic trauma service, allowing for
experience in trauma and fracture management, its sequelae and complications.
The caseload, wherein the trainee is either the primary surgeon or first assistant, includes a
sufficient number of operative procedures to gain proficiency in the management of these
cases at a limb reconstruction sub-speciality level.
The Limb Lengthening and Reconstruction fellowship program promotes clinical excellence in the
management of complex orthopaedic limb salvage and reconstruction under the guidance of
experienced consultants.
